ADMINISTRATION OF NON PRESCRIBED MEDICATION

As was discussed at the meeting, we are not able to administer non prescribed medication to children,  In previous years the school has taken Calpol, Ibuprofen and Piriton on these trips and obtained parents’ written permission to administer these medicines if the class teacher felt it was necessary. The Administration Of Medicines in Schools has recently been updated and schools are not permitted to hold non-prescribed medications. The Guidelines state ‘if a child or young person suffers regularly from acute pain or symptoms, such as a headache, period pain or hayfever, parents may provide the school with non prescribed medication alongside clear and appropriate instructions and consent for the medication to be administered.

We are therefore asking that IF you feel your child may need such medicines (including travel sickness tablets) while they are away on Arran, you provide any non-prescribed medicine in a zip lock plastic bag with your child’s name clearly marked on the outside and complete the ‘Parental Request for Child or Young Person to Self-administer Medication’. The medication will be looked after by the teachers and they will supervise children taking any such medicine and record the date and details of the medication taken. Please only provide enough medicine for the week away and ensure it is in the original pack or bottle.

Please can you hand any bags into the School Office by 9am on Friday 26 April so we can prepare a list and it will be one less thing to do on the morning of the trip.

We will discuss arrangements with parents directly for those children who are required to take a prescribed medication and this may include another form to be completed.
